Paul also warned Timothy that perilous times would come, when men would be “lovers of their own selves” and “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” — 2 Timothy 3:2,4.

Perhaps one of the greatest dangers facing the Church is not persecution from without, but coldness from within.

A CHURCH CAN BE BUSY AND STILL NEED REVIVAL

Jesus commanded:

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” — Mark 16:15

We must never abandon that command. Missions matter. Evangelism matters. Reaching the lost matters.

But there is another question we dare not ignore:

What about those already inside our churches?

What tragedy it would be to travel thousands of miles seeking souls while our own sons and daughters quietly drift away from God.

What tragedy to fill our missionary programmes while our prayer meetings become empty.

What tragedy to preach to the nations while our own young people would rather spend their evening being entertained than gathering to seek the face of God.

Going into all the world must never become an excuse for neglecting the spiritual condition of our own flock.

WHERE ARE THE YOUNG PEOPLE?

There have been churches where hundreds of young people once gathered.

Now some congregations struggle to gather even a small number of their own young people for fellowship and prayer.

We should not merely blame the young people.

We must ask ourselves:

What have they seen in us?

Have they seen Christianity as a living relationship with Jesus Christ—or merely as a Sunday routine?

Have they seen parents who pray?

Have they seen pastors who seek God?

Have they seen elders who live holy lives?

Have they seen Christians who love one another?

Have they seen the reality of God?

Young people need more than entertainment with a Christian name attached to it. They need to see that Jesus Christ is real.

WE NEED SHEPHERDS AFTER GOD’S HEART

God said:

“And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” — Jeremiah 3:15

The Church does not merely need clever speakers, administrators, personalities, or businessmen.

God’s flock needs shepherds.

A shepherd feeds the sheep.

A shepherd protects the sheep.

A shepherd notices when one is wandering.

A shepherd cares about the lambs as well as the mature sheep.

And a true shepherd remembers that the flock does not belong to him.

It belongs to Jesus Christ.

Peter wrote:

“Feed the flock of God which is among you.” — 1 Peter 5:2

When the wrong priorities enter leadership, the sheep suffer. When holiness disappears from leadership, the congregation suffers. When prayer disappears from leadership, eventually prayer disappears from the people.

WE HAVE FORSAKEN THE FOUNTAIN

Church buildings closing should cause Christians to examine themselves.

But the deepest problem is not buildings.

A building can remain open while the spiritual fire has already gone out.

God said through Jeremiah:

“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters.” — Jeremiah 2:13

That is the great danger.

We can have programmes without power.

Music without worship.

Preaching without conviction.

Activity without anointing.

Crowds without disciples.

Religion without revival.

The answer is not merely more money, although Christians should faithfully support God’s work. The answer is not merely better programmes or modern methods.

We need God.

REVIVAL MUST BEGIN WITH US

We sometimes look at society and say, “Look how far the nation has fallen.”

But Scripture says:

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God.” — 1 Peter 4:17

Before pointing at the world, the Church must examine itself.

Before asking why the world does not seek God, perhaps we should ask why so many Christians no longer seek Him in prayer.

Before asking why young people have lost interest, perhaps we should ask whether they have witnessed the fire of God burning in us.

The great need is not merely for the world to change.

The Church needs revival.

REVIVE THY WORK, O LORD

Revive our pulpits.

Revive our pastors.

Revive our elders.

Revive our prayer meetings.

Revive our Sunday schools.

Revive our youth fellowships.

Revive our families.

Revive our fathers and mothers.

Revive our sons and daughters.

Revive our evangelism.

Revive our love for Scripture.

Revive our burden for souls.

Revive our desire for holiness.

And, O Lord, begin with me.

The answer to spiritual decline is not despair.

The answer is not attacking another religion.

The answer is not looking backwards and merely saying, “Things were better years ago.”

The answer is to fall upon our knees and cry:

“Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?” — Psalm 85:6

The God who moved in generations past has not changed.

The Gospel has not changed.

Jesus Christ has not changed.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” — Hebrews 13:8

Therefore let the Church pray once more:

Revive Thy work, O Lord!Revive it in our day.Kindle again the holy fire.Call the wandering home.Raise up godly shepherds.Turn the hearts of our young people toward Christ.Fill our prayer meetings again—not merely with people, but with the presence of God.

And may revival begin, not with somebody else,

but with us.
