Faithful When Everything Is Taken Away

Job chapter 1 introduces us to a man named Job, who lived in the land of Uz. He was a godly, honest man who respected God and rejected evil. Job was greatly blessed: he had a large family, many servants, and considerable wealth. Yet his greatest treasure was his relationship with God.

Job prayed for his children

Job had seven sons and three daughters. His children often gathered together for meals and celebrations. After these gatherings, Job would offer sacrifices and pray for them, thinking that perhaps they had sinned against God in their hearts.

This shows that Job was a caring and prayerful father. He was concerned not only about his children’s outward behaviour but also about their spiritual condition.

Satan questioned Job’s faith

Satan came before God and accused Job of serving the Lord only because God had blessed and protected him. Satan claimed that if Job lost everything, he would turn against God.

God permitted Satan to test Job, but He placed a limit upon what Satan could do. This teaches us that Satan is not equal to God. He cannot act beyond the boundaries that God allows.

Job lost everything in one day

Terrible messages began arriving one after another:

• Job’s oxen and donkeys were stolen.
• Many of his servants were killed.
• Fire destroyed his sheep.
• His camels were taken away.
• Finally, a powerful wind caused the house where his children were gathered to collapse, killing them all.

In a single day, Job lost his possessions, his servants and, most painfully, his ten children. Few people have ever experienced such overwhelming sorrow.

Job worshipped instead of blaming God

Job tore his clothes and shaved his head as signs of genuine grief. He did not pretend that everything was all right. His heart was broken, yet he fell to the ground and worshipped God.

Job declared:

“The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
—Job 1:21

Job understood that he had brought nothing into the world and could take nothing out of it. Everything he possessed had been entrusted to him by God. Although Job could not understand why these tragedies had happened, he refused to curse or accuse the Lord.

The message for us today

Job chapter 1 teaches us that genuine faith is not based only upon receiving blessings. It is easy to praise God when life is comfortable, but faith is truly tested when trouble comes.

Suffering does not necessarily mean that someone has sinned or that God has abandoned them. Job’s trials were not punishment for wickedness. There was a spiritual battle taking place that Job could not see.

We may not understand everything God permits, but we can trust His character. Our tears do not mean that we have lost our faith. Like Job, we can grieve deeply while continuing to worship.

The enemy expected Job’s suffering to drive him away from God, but Job allowed it to bring him to his knees before God.

Conclusion

Job lost almost everything, but he did not lose his faith. His heart was broken, yet he continued to honour the Lord. When we cannot understand God’s ways, we can still trust His loving heart.
