Eliphaz’s Advice to Job

Job chapter 5 continues the speech of Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends. Eliphaz believes that suffering always comes because someone has sinned. Some of his words contain truth, but he wrongly assumes that Job’s troubles are God’s punishment.

1. Eliphaz warns against anger

Job 5:1–7

Eliphaz tells Job that resentment and jealousy destroy a person. He says that human beings are naturally born into trouble:

“Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.”
—Job 5:7

It is true that life in a fallen world includes suffering. However, Eliphaz implies that Job has brought his troubles upon himself. He does not understand that Job’s suffering is a test of faith—not punishment for hidden wickedness.

2. Eliphaz tells Job to seek God

Job 5:8–16

Eliphaz says:

“I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause.”
—Job 5:8

This is good advice. God performs wonderful works, provides rain, lifts the humble and gives hope to the poor. When trouble comes, we should certainly bring our burden to the Lord.

Yet Eliphaz speaks as though Job has wandered away from God. In reality, Job had faithfully served the Lord. We must be careful not to assume that everyone who suffers has turned away from God.

3. Eliphaz describes God’s correction

Job 5:17–18

Eliphaz declares:

“Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.”
—Job 5:17

God does discipline His children for their good, but not every hardship is divine correction. Sometimes suffering tests our faith, develops our character or serves a purpose that only God understands.

Eliphaz takes a true principle and applies it incorrectly to Job.

4. Eliphaz promises deliverance

Job 5:19–27

Eliphaz says that God can deliver people from famine, war, danger and destruction. He describes the peace and security that Job might enjoy if he accepts God’s correction.

Again, much of what Eliphaz says about God’s power is true. The problem is his belief that Job only needs to repent for his blessings to return. Eliphaz offers an easy explanation for a situation he does not fully understand.

The Main Lesson

Job chapter 5 teaches us to be careful when speaking to people who are suffering. We may speak truthful words but still use them in the wrong way. Eliphaz should have listened to Job, comforted him and admitted that he did not know why this tragedy had occurred.

When someone is hurting, they do not always need an explanation. Sometimes they need compassion, prayer and a faithful friend who will sit beside them.

God’s people can suffer without having committed some terrible sin. We may not understand what God is doing, but we can trust that He sees the whole picture. Job did not know the reason for his trial, but God had not abandoned him.

The message of Job chapter 5 is this: never judge another person’s faith by the troubles they are experiencing. Offer compassion before correction, and trust God when the reason for suffering remains hidden.
