When the Burden Is Too Heavy

A Poem Based on Job Chapter 6

“If only all my grief were weighed,”
The broken servant Job had prayed;
“My sorrow’s heavier than the sand,
And no one seems to understand.”

His health was gone, his children too,
His skies were dark, no light shone through;
He spoke the anguish of his soul,
For grief had taken a dreadful toll.

His friends had come and sat nearby,
But judged the tears within his eye;
Their words, instead of bringing peace,
Made Job’s distress and pain increase.

“A suffering friend needs pity shown,
Not cruel words or judgment thrown;
I never asked for wealth or gold,
But for a hand that I could hold.”

Like streams that vanish in the heat,
His friends had failed him in defeat;
When Job had needed comfort most,
Their loving kindness was a ghost.

“Then teach me where I have gone wrong,
And I will listen all day long;
But do not judge my wounded cries,
For God alone sees through all eyes.”

When pain is deep and hope seems small,
Our loving God still sees it all;
Though heaven may silent seem to be,
The Lord is near, though none can see.

So do not judge the broken heart,
Or cause another wound to start;
Speak words of grace, be kind and true,
For Christ has shown such love to you.

Stand with the weary through their night,
And help them seek the Saviour’s light;
A faithful friend will kneel and pray
And never turn their face away.

When burdens seem too great to bear,
Remember Jesus still is there;
He hears each cry and sees each tear—
The broken-hearted He draws near.

So place your sorrow in His hand;
One day in glory you will understand.
The darkest chapter is not the end—
God is your refuge, Lord and Friend.
