Henri Dunant: From the Battlefield to Poverty

Jean-Henri Dunant was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1828. He grew up in a wealthy and deeply Christian home. His parents taught him that faith should be demonstrated through compassion. His father helped orphans and prisoners, while his mother cared for the sick and poor.

As a young man, Henri studied the Bible, visited prisoners and helped people in need. However, he also became an ambitious businessman. He travelled to North Africa hoping to build a successful business and make his fortune.

In 1859, while travelling through northern Italy on business, Henri came upon the terrible aftermath of the Battle of Solferino. Thousands of wounded and dying soldiers lay across the battlefield with very little medical assistance.

Henri temporarily forgot about his business plans. Deeply moved by the suffering, he called upon the people of a nearby village to help him care for the wounded. They treated soldiers from every army, repeating the words:

“Tutti fratelli”—“We are all brothers.”

Henri could not forget what he had witnessed. He wrote a book called A Memory of Solferino, describing the horrors of the battlefield. He proposed that volunteer organisations should be established in every country to care for wounded soldiers, regardless of which side they were fighting for.

His vision helped bring about the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and the first Geneva Convention in 1864.

Henri Dunant became respected throughout Europe, but while he devoted himself to his humanitarian mission, his businesses were failing. In 1867, financial disaster struck. He was declared bankrupt, his reputation was ruined, and he was forced to leave Geneva.

The man who had helped create an organisation that would eventually assist millions of people now needed help himself.

Henri wandered from place to place in extreme poverty. At times, he survived on scraps of bread and even slept outdoors. Many people forgot him, while others rejected him because of his business failure.

His life reminds us of the words of Jesus:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
—Mark 8:36

However, Henri Dunant’s story was not simply the story of a man punished for wanting money. It was the story of a complicated man whose business ambitions failed, but whose compassion changed the world. Although he lost his wealth and position, the merciful work he began continued to grow.

Eventually, Henri settled in a hospital and nursing home in Heiden, Switzerland. In 1895, a journalist discovered that the forgotten founder of the Red Cross was still alive. The story spread, and people began honouring him once again.

In 1901, Henri Dunant became a joint recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. Yet he kept the prize money safely deposited and gave instructions that some of his remaining money should be used to help poor and sick people.

Henri died in 1910, but the work inspired by his compassion continues throughout the world.

His story teaches us that money, success and human praise can disappear. A person may lose a fortune, a reputation and even the comfort of a home. But an act of mercy performed for suffering people can continue bearing fruit long after that person is gone.

Henri Dunant began his journey as a businessman searching for success. On the battlefield of Solferino, however, he discovered a greater calling: to recognise every wounded and suffering person as a neighbour in need.

The fortune he sought was lost, but the compassion he demonstrated became his lasting treasure.
