David Brainerd — The Man Who Prayed in the Wilderness

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” — James 5:16

Many years ago, in the 1700s, there lived a young man named David Brainerd.

He was not a famous preacher with a great church. He did not have a comfortable home, plenty of money, or an easy life.

David was often sick, lonely and tired.

But there was one thing he had—a burning desire to serve God.

David believed that people needed to hear about Jesus Christ, so he became a missionary to Native American communities in colonial America.

That meant travelling through forests and wilderness, sometimes on horseback, with very few comforts.

There were no warm church buildings waiting for him.

No microphones.

No comfortable hotels.

Sometimes there was only David, his Bible, the wilderness—and God.

A Man of Prayer

David Brainerd knew that preaching alone could not change a person’s heart.

So he prayed.

And prayed.

And prayed some more.

There were times when he would go away by himself into the woods and spend hours seeking God.

Sometimes the weather was bitterly cold. Sometimes he was weak and unwell. Yet he continued praying for the people God had placed upon his heart.

His prayer was not simply:

“Lord, bless my ministry.”

His burden was deeper:

“Lord, save these people. Let them know Christ.”

David wanted to see lives changed by the power of God.

When God Began to Move

For a time, David saw very little happening.

Imagine preaching, praying and travelling—and wondering whether anybody was really listening.

It would have been easy to give up.

But David kept going.

Then things began to change.

As he preached about Jesus Christ, people began listening seriously. Some became deeply concerned about their spiritual condition. Brainerd recorded occasions when people wept as he preached and prayed with them.

And lives began to change.

People who had once shown little interest in his message now wanted to hear more about Christ.

David discovered something every Christian needs to remember:

We may plant the seed and water it, but God gives the increase.

As Paul wrote:

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6

His Strength Was Running Out

David’s work came at a tremendous cost.

His health became increasingly poor. He suffered seriously from tuberculosis, although in those days they called it consumption.

Still, his desire to serve Christ remained strong.

Eventually his body could take no more.

David Brainerd died in 1747, only 29 years old.

Twenty-nine!

Some might look at such a short life and say,

“What could one young man accomplish in such a little time?”

But David’s influence did not finish at his grave.

After his death, the preacher Jonathan Edwards published an account of Brainerd’s life and writings.

His story went on to inspire generations of Christians and missionaries.

The young missionary who prayed in lonely places continued speaking long after his voice had fallen silent.

The Lesson of David Brainerd

David Brainerd’s story reminds us that God is not looking for people who have everything.

He is looking for people who will give Him what they have.

You may feel weak.

Pray anyway.

You may feel that nobody notices what you are doing.

Serve anyway.

You may have prayed for someone for years without seeing an answer.

Keep praying.

You may think your little work for God cannot make much difference.

Leave the results with Him.

David Brainerd had no television ministry, no internet and no great organisation behind him.

He had a Bible.

He had prayer.

He had a burden for souls.

And above all—

He had God.

Never underestimate what God can do through one person completely surrendered to Him.

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” — Jeremiah 33:3

A Thought to Remember

A short life given completely to God can leave a long testimony behind.
