The Man Who Built Bigger Barns

Luke 12:16–21

A wealthy man surveyed his field,
And praised the harvest it would yield;
“My barns are full—what shall I do?
I need more space to store this too.”

“I’ll pull them down and build once more,
With bigger barns and room to store;
My grain and goods will safely stay,
And I can rest for many a day.”

“My soul,” he said, “you’ve wealth in store,
Enough for years, and plenty more;
So eat and drink, enjoy your gold—
You’ve gathered treasures without fold.”

But God declared, “You foolish man,
Your life was never yours to plan;
This very night your soul must go—
Then who shall own the wealth below?”

His barns were full, his riches great,
But earthly gold could change no fate;
He planned for life beneath the sun,
But not for when his life was done.

No pockets line a burial shroud,
No earthly treasure is allowed;
We bring no riches when we come,
And carry nothing when called home.

So do not trust in wealth or land,
For life itself is in God’s hand;
Be rich toward God and gladly give—
For Christ alone can help us live.

Build not your hope on earthly store,
But seek the Lord forevermore;
For treasures gathered here depart,
But heaven’s wealth remains in the heart.

Prepare with wisdom for each day,
But never let wealth lead you astray;
Lay treasure up beyond the skies,
Where nothing fades and nothing dies.
