The Shepherd Boy God Chose
David was only a young shepherd boy when his father, Jesse, gave him the responsibility of caring for the family’s sheep. While his older brothers were regarded as strong and important, David was sent into the lonely fields. Yet he did not complain or consider the work beneath him. He was determined to please his father and faithfully complete every task entrusted to him.
Looking after sheep was not always peaceful. One day, a lion came and carried away a lamb from the flock. On another occasion, a bear attacked. David could have run away, but he courageously faced both animals and rescued the sheep.
David may have held the shepherd’s staff, but the protecting hand of Almighty God was upon him. The Lord was preparing this young man for something far greater. Every lonely night, every dangerous encounter and every faithful act was part of God’s training for the future king of Israel.
David never imagined that he would one day sit upon a throne. Even when the prophet Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint the next king, David was left outside tending the sheep. His own family did not think he could possibly be God’s chosen one. But the Lord said:
“For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
—1 Samuel 16:7
Later, when David visited his brothers on the battlefield, they looked down upon him and questioned his motives. Yet David refused to be discouraged. The same God who had delivered him from the lion and the bear would help him face the giant Goliath.
David was young and inexperienced in the eyes of men, but he had learned to trust God when nobody was watching. The forgotten shepherd boy became a courageous warrior and, in God’s appointed time, the king of Israel. He was not perfect, but he became known as a man after God’s own heart.
Young Christian, never despise the small responsibilities God has given you. Do your best without complaining, even when others overlook you or look down upon you. Remain faithful, prayerful and obedient. God may be using today’s quiet duties and difficult battles to prepare you for tomorrow’s greater calling.
You, too, could be God’s chosen servant for the future.
